Missing 411: The Devil's in the Details (2014)

This is the fourth installment of David's work on missing people in national parks. First thing to be said, this is NOT available on Amazon. It is available from David's site. Much like the previous books, this is a collection of cases that fit certain criteria. There are details in the cases that David focuses on, and he lays everything out pretty clearly. In some cases there is a lot of detail, whereas in others, the information is sparse. I am sure, in the end, some of these cases will be found to have prosaic explanations. Some of them, however, are very unusual. In this book, David has found the first cases that involve water disappearances that also fit some of the criteria. These cases are strange. If you have not read the previous books, you can still start on this one if you want. Everything is well explained, but reading all the books does give you a better idea of how strange these disappearances are. These are not cases of animal attacks, or serial killers, or serial kidnappers. There is something here we are missing, that we are not aware of, that is happening to these people. You can't really get an understanding of just how odd it all is, without reading the books. The cases are separated by state, and in the back are charts with various key points outlined as David tries to flesh out the patterns. This book is written pretty plainly, it's not told in story form, just facts from various sources, sometimes with comments from David afterwards. This really is a bewildering mystery, and it's a hard to put down book. It definitely makes you think twice about wandering national parks alone.

Interview with David Paulides author of Missing 411 - September 21, 2013

Where Did the Road Go? Show Archive

In a special 2 hour interview, we talk with David Paulides about his Missing 411 work. David has released three Missing 411 volumes dealing with mysterious disappearances in National Parks. On first glance, people missing in National Parks may not seem strange, after all, people get lost, animals attack, etc, but these disappearances defy explanation  David has discovered something real and disturbing. We discuss the patterns and individual cases to illustrate just how strange these disappearances are. We will talk about what may be happening and what the park service is doing, or not doing, about it. This work is important. Very important. People, often small children are disappearing into thin air, sometimes never to be found again, sometimes found dead, and occasionally found alive. We hear about all of these. The circumstances are bizarre, as are the patterns. Something is going on, and this is a subject that people need to know more about.

For the next two weeks we will have on the show David Paulides. Because of the length and depth of this interview, I have split it into two parts. We dig in detail into the Missing 411 Phenomenon, mysterious disappearances in and around National Parks, hear about new cases, and try to weed out what makes sense in all of this.

David's website is www.canammissing.com

Also take the time to sign this petition; This petition was authored by a reader of the "Missing 411" books. It addresses one of the specific issues we discuss in the books, the lack of accountability inside the DOI when dealing with missing people on their land. Here is the exact wording in the petition:

Currently, there is no centralized registry or database of persons who have gone missing in our national parks and forests or on Bureau of Land Management lands. If search and rescue parties are unable to locate the missing, no records are required to be kept by our government about the missing person case or the circumstances surrounding the event. When remains of the missing are found, again, no records are required to be maintained.
It is time to demand that a national, publicly accessible registry/database be created in which all missing persons are accounted for in our national parks and forests and on BLM lands. The purpose of this would be to make the government accountable for keeping track of the missing, to inform the public of the facts surrounding missing persons cases on public lands, as well as keeping account of all missing individuals and the circumstances under which they went missing on public lands.

We need everyone to get behind this effort and help us get to 10,000 signatures. David Paulides is assisting the author in her efforts and will do everything possible for this issue to get the visibility it deserves.

Missing 411: Eastern US, Western US, and North America and Beyond by David Paulides (2011 and 2012)

This is not the review of one book, but of three. There are three volumes of Missing 411; Eastern United States, Western United States, and North America and Beyond. The first two, I believe were released together and were planned as one book, but there was too much information, so it was split in two. The first two were released in 2011, and the third in 2012.

What you have here is both fascinating and deeply disturbing. These are cases of missing people, which span for over 100 years, that have all disappeared in or around National Parks. Now, at first, that may not sound so strange, plenty of people get lost, attacked by wild animals, etc. Sure. These, however, are not those cases. These cases are baffling and perplexing. These people, and a good number of them children, disappear in circumstances that should not have led to a disappearance. People, out of sight for mere moments, never found again. Experienced hunters and hikers who disappear without a trace, or, worse yet, whose bodies are found in inexplicable places. Those found alive, don't seem to be able explain where they have been, and those that can relate something, just add to the mystery.

Make no mistake, David Paulides has fleshed out something that, until now, no one has noticed, no one has taken a serious look at, and if they have, they have not gone public with it. This is important work. And in these books, you will find no speculation, no attempt to wedge in any particular theory. David relates the facts from FOIA documents, newspapers, park records, Police reports, and occasionally those involved.

There are patterns here, and they make no real sense, but yet, there they are. Some examples; children often disappear with their dogs, trained Bloodhounds can't or won't track the victims, bad weather hits the region where the person has disappeared shortly afterwards, there are clusters of people in certain areas, spread out through decades, berries are often a factor (people disappear while picking or near berries, or are found by berry bushes), often people are found without clothing (but not molested in any way), often victims are found near swamps, creeks, or boulder fields, and, people will often be found in an area that has been searched thoroughly just previous to their discovery. In the 100's of cases in these books, you will find these patterns happening again and again. As I said, they make no sense, but this is not hearsay or legends, these are documented cases, with the information being gathered from official sources.

David is a former law office with 20 years of experience. This work is exhaustive and detailed, and put together in a way that defies any simple answers. These books record disappearances that have happened. There is no doubt here, and no easy explanations. The reporting here is done with no bias, just a record of the facts and an attempt to find patterns to these strange events. It's creepy. It's chilling. It makes me think twice about wandering alone in the woods, especially in certain places. It is something that needs more attention. One strange disappearance can be overlooked or explained away. Not three thick books filled with similar disappearances.

You need to read this. I am not sure what we know about our world today, can explain what is happening to the people in these books. Highly recommended and an essential volume of work.

You can find out more at: www.canammissing.com. Do not by the books from Amazon, you will be paying twice as much as you can on David's site.
